Insurance Tips for Storm and Other Damage
10/5/2016 (Permalink)
Some insurance policies can be complicated and may not cover all types of damage.
On many polices, flood damage, (an example being run off from a hillside, creek or river) is not covered. It is a good idea to go over these items with your insurance agent before damage occurs to know what is and isn’t covered.
What to do before and during a severe storm:
If you live on or at the foot of a hillside, place sandbags around the perimeter of your home. If water is close to entering your home, try placing rolled up towels along the inside of exterior doors to prevent water from getting in.
Keep your gutters clean. If you know a large amount of rain is coming, try to get them cleaned out beforehand.
If you expect your home to flood, move valuables and items up from lower levels and away from doors and windows.
Have a copy of your insurance policy.

Take photos of damage if you can safely do so.
What to do after the storm:
Review damage to home, take additional photos of damage if it is safe to do so. Try to get an idea of what will need to be repaired.
Review your deductible and policy. If you believe damage to be more than your deductible and damage will be covered, it may be best to file a claim for repairs.
