Why You Should Make a Home Emergency Kit

With the craziness going on in the world right now, we need to be prepared for anything that comes our way.
If you experienced a power outage in the middle of the winter, what would you do? Would you be ready?
If you don’t feel prepared, it might be time for you to create a home emergency kit. Here are some items that should be in your kit.
- Non-Perishable Food
Canned foods like fish, beans and other vegetables are ideal choices (just remember to have a manual can opener). Some other options are nut butters, dried fruits and vegetables, nuts, jerky and grains.
- Water for Drinking and Cooking
If you lose access to your water, it will be crucial to have a backup plan. Having a five gallon water jug (or having multiple jugs) could come in handy for both hydration and cooking.
- Portable Heater
Even without electricity, there are still options to heat your home. Portable heaters— whether they are powered by propane, natural gas or kerosene—are crucial to have in case of an outage.
- Candles, Matches or Lighters
Without power, candles will be necessary for lighting. Matches or multi-purpose lighters will come in handy to light the candles and to make a fire.
- Flashlights and Fresh Batteries
While most of us rely on our phones as flashlights, a traditional flashlight will be beneficial for light in the case of an outage. Make sure you have new batteries just in case the flashlight goes out.
- Portable Phone Chargers
If you don’t have access to electricity, you can’t charge your cell phone. However, if you have pre-charged portable chargers in your emergency kit, you can keep your phone battery from dying.
- Important Medicines
If you don’t want to be fumbling through the dark for your medicine, keeping some in your emergency kit could be a smart move.
